Enterprise Search: Save Time. Save Money.

By Dick Weisinger

Companies that implement Enterprise Search are reporting significant productivity gains for their workers.  That’s the result of an Aberdeen survey of 118 companies taken in July and August 2009.

Survey respondents were asked to compare their current efficiencies versus last year.  Questions considered the speed of searching and finding information, the search solution performance, and the setup time of the enterprise search solution.

Companies were ranked based on their productivity gains.  The top 20% of companies reported significant improvements. For examples, executives at the top companies reported saving as much as six hours a week in searching for information.  Even for companies that ranked lower, executives reported gains of one hour per week.

For top performing companies, enterprise search was tuned so that 67% of the time relevant results were are returned in the first page of results.  Lower ranked comapnies only had a successful hit rate of 42% on the first page.

One common characteristic of top companies was the attempt to aggregate all company assets into a single view for searching.

The search market grew 19% last year and is on track to grow 7% this year.

As to why companies are turning to search, compliance is the most often mentioned reason.  The report says that “Once a CFO realizes that he doesn’t have enough visibility into an organization,  especially into e-mail, search becomes the fastest way to get a handle on what’s going on.”
