AI Chip Market: Intense Global Competition

By Dick Weisinger

A strong demand for artificial intelligence chips is being driven by the increased use of deep learning and neural network applications.

The AI chip market has been explosive with more than 80 global startups in the space funded by $10.5 billion competing against 34 more established electronics companies that have also entered the market.

The range of the types of chips being developed range from high-end HPC environments and cloud computing to use in small edge devices. The applications range from engineering, manufacturing, robotics and autonomous vehicles to mobile, edge, IoT, and consumer devices.

The Santa Clara based company Nvidia is currently the dominant company in the AI market. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, said that “A.I. is the most powerful technology force of our time. We will create the world’s premier computing company for the age of A.I.”

But the US lead in the AI chip market may be in jeopardy.

Rahul Kumar, analyst at Allied Market Research, said that “in 2018, U.S. dominated the North America market and UK led the overall AI chip market in Europe. However, in Asia-Pacific, China currently dominates the market. China has progressively competed with the U.S. in technological innovations in AI. Many tech companies in China, such as Baidu, invested heavily in technology and have employed skilled employees from its foreign rivals. The enormous data generated by numerous internet users in the country is expected to be a key driving factor for the global artificial intelligence chip market growth.”
