Application Modernization: Better UX, Faster, and More Secure

By Dick Weisinger

Application modernization is the rewriting or porting of a software system to more current technologies. The changes involved in the move could include change of software version, change of computer programming language, architecture or libraries, different protocols, or different hardware or platform. To be cost effective, the change generally aims to retain the core value of the existing legacy system. The benefit is to be able to take advantage of more modern technologies.

Rapid changes in technology is also changing people’s expectations for how businesses should work and that in turn is driving rapid modernization of existing business software. Businesses are focusing on better user experience, better security, faster speed and consolidated systems.

Jamie Head, CTO/CDO of Ocean Spray, said that “we had old architecture and infrastructure to retire … it’s more about when you do the move, how do you rearchitect your applications and business so they’re more modern in that space?”

Thomas Klinect, senior research director at Gartner, said that “modernizations are so wrapped around that complexity. Companies have to “unwind” highly complex environments “where applications talk to the databases, which talk to applications, which connects to more databases. If because if you don’t unwind the complexity, then there’s no reason to move.”

Spot on Thomas. Modernizing infra can have compelling benefit. But to achieve Digital Transformation rearchitecting is required. The industry challenge is to enable modernization without requiring applications to be re written from the ground up.
