Artificial Intelligence: All Products to Be Influenced by or a Part of AI by 2020

By Dick Weisinger

The Artificial Intelligence market is hot.  PwC notes that between 2015 and 2016 that there were $5 billion deals related to AI made by venture capitalists.  The startups and new ventures from that funding are now starting to bring product to market.  67 percent of all business decision makers say that AI has potential to help them to automate processes and optimize their business.

Gartner cites some trends related to AI that are occurring, whether for bad or good, in the marketplace:

  • AI Whitewashing. Vendors are slapping the “includes AI” marketing stamp on everything whether the product really uses AI or not.
  • Trying to adopt complicated and state of the art AI can lead to problems.  Gartner recommends sticking with AI products that are simple and have a proven track record.
  • Packaged and embedded AI is popular now, primarily because most organization just don’t have the right skills in-house to build and deploy AI on their own.
  • By 2020 almost every product will be in some way affected by AI technologies

Jim Hare, research vice president at Gartner, said that “AI offers exciting possibilities, but unfortunately, most vendors are focused on the goal of simply building and marketing an AI-based product rather than first identifying needs, potential uses and the business value to customers.”
