Artificial Intelligence and IoT: IT rates Enhanced Insight Rates Low Compared to Benefits of Machine Learning
Surprisingly, IT departments rate ‘enhanced insight and decision making’ at the bottom of the list for how they intend to use artificial intelligence and machine learning, is the finding of a survey by GlobalData. Instead IT is excited about the opportunity of using machine learning to help automate operations and reduce costs.
In particular, GlobalData identifies the application of artificial intelligence to the Internet of Things (IoT) as an area that will be able to provide for good return on investment (RoI). The benefits of using AI with IoT include:
- Ability to better detect anomalies
- Ability to predict desired outcomes
While IoT users said that the ability to have high-level oversight of their project is useful, it was often more useful to them to be able to use machine learning (ML) tools with devices connected at the edge. Edge ML tools can help identify and solve specific problems and challenges in the field.
Tom Siebel, founder of C3 IoT, says that IoT will be influenced and enabled by vector technologies like AI, big data, and cloud computing. Siebel told Datanami that “those are the horses that we’re riding, and those vectors appear to be converging. With those technologies, we’re able to solve classes of problems that were previously unsolvable.”
