Artificial Intelligence: How Will Technologies Like Automation and Machine Learning Impact Humans?
Both Elon Musk and Bill Gates predict a world where machines and algorithms will dominate.
In 2017, Musk said that “There certainly will be job disruption. Because what’s going to happen is robots will be able to do everything better than us. I mean all of us. Yeah, I am not sure exactly what to do about this. This is really the scariest problem to me, I will tell you.”
In Janauary 2018, Gates said that “There will be challenges because the rate of change will be faster in these next 20 years than it’s been before.”
PwC has produced two conflicting reports. One released in September 2017 which predicts that it will be necessary for humans to frequently learn new skills to update themselves. Jeff Hesse, principal at PwC, said that “I think the future of work is going to create some really challenging question for us to deal with.”
A more recent PwC report shows more optimism for how AI will changes the work lives of people.
John Hawksworth, chief economist at PwC, put a new spin on what might happen in the new report saying that “major new technologies, from steam engines to computers, displace some existing jobs but also generate large productivity gains. This reduces prices and increases real income and spending levels, which in turn creates demand for additional workers.”
