Big Data: Businesses Overconfident in their Ability to Use Big Data
Businesses are “overconfident” in how they’re using Big Data technologies, according to a report by AtScale. Nearly four-fifths of them think that their level of understanding, use and “maturity” with using Big Data was at a “medium” or “high” level. The report found that the number of organizations with high levels of maturity to be significantly lower, closer to 12 percent.
The AtScale report found that “The companies that achieve a high-level and transformational stage of maturity tend to consider Big Data for revenue generation. Big Data is a game changer for their organization and they are building specific applications that will allow them to monetize Big Data. They have a road map for replacing their enterprise data warehouse (EDW) with a Big Data Lake. They might have one or multiple platforms across their company and are looking to provide self-serve and secure access to their applications broadly, internally and externally.”
The AtScale report also found that by far users preferred working in the cloud rather than on-premise, something that nearly three-quarters of businesses agreed with.
While centralization and elimination of siloed data has been a goal of businesses for year, the AtScale report found that the trend is going in the opposite direction.
David Mariani, CEO of AtScale, said that “the big change over the past two years is the realization that there’s not a single data platform that’s going to handle all the use cases. And while everybody thought that Hadoop was going to be good a everything, I think they figured out exactly what it’s good at, which means they still need other data stores and other platforms.
