Big Data: Enabling the Right Hemisphere with 3D Visualization
SAP has started marketing a visual enterprise platform which incorporates real-time 3D visualization as part of a data management solutions. That’s just one example. Increasingly Big Data is being teamed with Big Computing (the product of Moore’s Law applied over several decades) to create new tools and products that enable complex visual interactions for exploring data sets for use in business, science, and research.
Dr. Alex Philp, Founder and CTO of TerraEchos, said that “One of the most challenging dimensions of streaming analytics is streaming visualization and the impact on human cognitive process — how we know.”
In the area of biology and Life Sciences, for example, 3D visualization is being applied to better understand complex molecular reactions. Work at Sheffield University in the UK, for example, is visualizing protein structures in 3D using a projection technology developed by a Virtual Reality company called Virtalis. Patrick Baker from Sheffield University said that their technique can help them tease out the secret workings of various proteins by overlaying them in a 3D simulation with bacterial agents. Baker said that “It allows collaborators to look at the same molecule and understand what we’re talking about.”
Tom Abel, an associate professor of physics at Stanford, said that with complex data visualization of astronomic data that “You can right away see if something is wrong.” Visualizations can immediately tip them off as to whether they’re going in the right direction when developing a theory to explain the meaning of the data. Similarly, Bronson Messer, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Tennessee, said that “without visualizations, we would have been waving our hands, still analyzing data.”
