Big Data: IT Beefing up Storage, Bandwidth and Staffing to Take on Big Data
Two-thirds of IT managers think that Big Data will be a top strategic priority for their company over the next five years, and 60 percent of IT managers think that using Big Data will help them improve their ability to make decisions and compete globally. Those are the results of the a report by Cisco that surveyed the opinions of IT groups on the topic of Big Data.
The results echo the results of quite a few other Big Data reports. But the report has a bit of a twist which is understandable given the perspective of Cisco. Generally the focus of Big Data is on the need to beef up storage. But Cisco reminds us in this report that Big Data projects also need to think about big bandwidth and the stress that Big Data will put on the network.
More than half of the IT professionals surveyed said that Big Data will cause them to increase the size of their IT budget. These businesses expect to spend more for technology personnel and expertise.
- 57 percent say that they will increase their Big Data budget over the next three years
- 81 percent say that Big Data projects will require them to use some amount of cloud computing
- 48 percent say that the load on their networks will double over the next two years, and 23 percent say that their network load will triple
- 21 percent say that in order to support Big Data that they will need to increase their network bandwidth
