Big Data: Networked Athletes to Generate Huge Data Sets/Stats for Sports Fans
Starting last week the NFL will be attaching tracking sensors to players to gather a huge wealth of sports data. The sensors will be embedded into the shoulder pad of each football player and will be continuously wiring data back to 20 different receivers that have been set up in 18 of the 31 NFL stadiums. The sensors used will be Zebra Technology radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.
The data collected will include information on how fast a player is running, player positions, and the distance that a player has traveled. Football fans will be able to track the information via the downloadable NFL 2015 app for Xbox One and Windows 10. Coaches and players will be able to monitor how the game is going and use the data as a tool for post-game analysis. The data will also be sent to broadcasters and used for display on screens in the stadium during the game.
Matt Swensson, senior director of Emerging Products and Technology at the NFL, said that “we’ve always had these traditional NFL stats. The league has been very interested in trying to broaden that and bring new statistics to the fans. Along the way, there’s been more realization about how the data can be leveraged to make workflow more efficient around the game. This type of initiative really opens the doors to do more things at the venue. At the Pro Bowl last year, we had a display up that showed what players were on the field. By putting up what players were on the field in real time, it really gave fans more information.”
Jill Stelfox, vice president at Zebra Technology, said that “the possibilities are truly endless. The players love this kind of tracking technology because of that. They’re professional athletes by every stretch of the imagination. They want more data about themselves — how they can stay hydrated better, perform better. Anything that can help them do that, they really want.”
