Big Data: Plotting a Path of Success with Big Data Analytics (BDA)

By Dick Weisinger

“The ability to manage and analyze Big Data and derive value from these activities will increasingly define an organization’s ability to compete or service its constituents,” said Dan Vesset, IDC Business analytics research program vice president.

The market size for the technology and services related to Big Data Analytics is now over $100 billion annually.  IDC has developed a methodology that they’re calling the Big Data Analytics (BDA) Maturity Model to help businesses make good decisions about how they can invest in this technology.

IDC’s Big Data Analytics (BDA) Maturity Model is modeled after Carnegie Mellon’s Capability Maturity Model.  The goals of the model include:

  • Help companies assess their Big Data Analytics competancy
  • Help companies define short and long-term goals
  • Help companies make decisions about Big Data Analytics investments, like technology and staffing

The IDC BDA Maturity Model identifies the five key components for success:

  • Data
  • People
  • Process
  • Technology
  • Intent

There are five stages of Big Data deployment according to the IDC Maturity Model:

  • Ad Hoc
  • Opportunistic
  • Repeatable
  • Managed
  • Optimized
