Business Technology: Top Trends for 2014
Brian Hopkins, analyst at Gartner, reported three main categories of technology trends that will characterize technology change in 2014. They are:
- Engagement – Businesses need to create a compelling digital experience to attract and engage their customers
- Smart – Smart systems will allow business to derive competitive advantage
- Nimble – IT must embrace change to help the business become both nimble and secure
More specifically, over the next 18 months, Gartner identifies the following top 10 technology trends:
- Digital convergence erodes boundaries – consumers increasingly don’t distinguish between physical and digital experiences
- Digital experiences increasingly define businesses
- APIs become the digital glue for building new services
- Businesses adopt new data concepts like Big Data, Open Data, analytics, and collaboration
- We’ll move closer to a reality of the internet of things as we increasingly see more connectivity with devices
- Businesses need to rethink security and ‘trust’ and how best to avoid loss of data
- Infrastructure will change from being a barrier to progress to a being a catalyst for it
- Mobile and cloud will become better understood, better implemented, and more frequently adopted
- IT increasingly will lose ownership of processes and systems to business groups
- IT will need to become an agile service broker or lose relevance
