Challenging Network Bandwidth: Data Center IP Traffic to Triple by 2017

Network traffic in data centers continues to rise dramatically. A recent Cisco report expects that annual global data center IP traffic will reach 7.7 zettabytes by the end of 2017, nearly triple the level of IP data traffic seen in 2012. That equates to a 25 percent compound annual growth rate. 7.7 zettabytes of bandwidth is equivalent to 107 trillion hours of streaming music, enough for one and one half years of nonstop listening for everyone on the planet.

17 percent of data center traffic is driven by users accessing cloud resources to surf the web, stream video, collaborate, and access connected devices. 7 percent of the traffic is associated with data centers for things like data replication and software/system updates. The remaining 76 percent of traffic happens within the data center and is associated with the storage and the movement of production and development data in a virtualized environment.

Doug Merritt, senior vice president of Product and Solutions Marketing at Cisco, said that “people all over the world continue to demand the ability to access personal, business and entertainment content anywhere on any device, and each transaction in a virtualized, cloud environment can cause cascading effects on the network Relevant Products/Services. Because of this continuing trend, we are seeing huge increases in the amount of cloud traffic within, between and beyond data centers over the next four years.”

David Palmer-Stevens, SI manager at datacenter-equipment manufacturer Panduit, told BusinessCloudNews that “this shift is relentless and the dramatic move to cloud computing is turning on its head the traditional thinking on how data centres are designed and deployed. Looking at power, cooling and cabling design is just as important as the IT side in delivering what the customer wants. With this set to grow even further we must start implementing changes to create a more robust, efficient infrastructure to support this – otherwise we will see even more outages and failures.”
