Data Management: SMBs Struggle in Preparing for Disaster Recovery
The backup and recovery process is a generally under-appreciated task of IT, until of course, a disaster strikes. Depending on the nature of the problem, recovery can take considerable time. Only 7 percent of organizations felt confident that they could recover within two hours after an IT failure.
A report, sponsored by Axcient, looked at how IT professionals in small and medium sized companies are prepared to respond to IT failures and backup and recovery processes.
The report found that:
- Most organizations recognize that backups are critical, but few organizations have a complete backup and recovery strategy and solution in place.
- IT failures happen, and when they do, the time to recover is very disruptive. Few organizations are prepared to respond quickly.
- Many organizations have fragmented systems in place for backup and recovery. Often the tools have overlap in the functionality available.
Benefits of cloud-based backup and recovery include:
- Faster to recover after a disaster (53 percent)
- Backup and recovery tasks take less time (50 percent)
- Application data still accessible after a disaster (45 percent)
- Ability to fully recover (44 percent)
- Overall cost savings (36 percent)
Diane Hagglund, Founder and analyst at Dimensional Research, said that “complete protection and recovery is imperative for all companies, regardless of size. Given the staggering complexity and limitation of traditional on-premise backup and recovery solutions, there is clear value in fully transitioning to a single, comprehensive cloud-based solution.”
