Cloud Computing: Cloud Spending to Surpass OnPremise by 2018
Global IT continues to move to the cloud. A new IDC report estimates that in just three years more than half of money spent on software, servers and storage will be attributed to the cloud. Between now and 2018, cloud spending will increase annually by 22.8 percent, nearly six times faster than the overall IT market, reaching $127 billion in 2018.
A breakdown of the cloud spending shows that 70 percent will be spent on SaaS, followed by infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) spending.
Frank Gens, senior vice president at IDC, said that “over the next four to five years, IDC expects the community of developers to triple and to create a ten-fold increase in the number of new cloud-based solutions. Many of these solutions will become more strategic than traditional IT has ever been. At the same time, there will be unprecedented competition and consolidation among the leading cloud providers. This combination of explosive innovation and intense competition will make the next several years a pivotal period for current and aspiring IT market leaders.”
