Cloud Computing: Data Center Traffic to Triple in Five Years
Over the next five years, global data center IP traffic is expected to triple, based on the Global Cloud Index report from Cisco Systems, reaching 8.6 zetabytes (ZB or a trillion gigabytes) per year. An Infographic illustrating Cisco’s findings is available here.
The Cisco report notes the different use cases that are supported by private and public cloud implementations. The private cloud, on the one hand, is focusing primarily on IaaS and PaaS, while the public cloud instead focuses on SaaS. But both are seeing huge growth. A Synergy Research estimates that the public cloud is growing at a 50 percent annual rate while both hybrid and private clouds are showing 40 and 45 percent growth.
Kelly Ahuja, senior vice-president at Cisco, said that “even with public cloud workloads having significant growth, by 2018, almost 70% of cloud workloads will still be private cloud-related, requiring the ability of workloads to bridge across a hybrid private/public cloud environment.”
Another finding of the Cisco report is that by 2018, 53 percent of all global residential Internet users will have personal cloud storage, and the average consumer cloud storage traffic per user will be 811 megabytes per month by 2018, compared to 186 megabytes per month in 2013.
