Cloud Computing: Fear of Security Issues can Stymie Innovation and Growth
Security remains the weak leg of the cloud computing phenomenon. While the rate of adoption of cloud technologies has been nothing short of torrid, a report by Ovum finds that cloud adoption might even be quicker that it has been if it weren’t for worries about security. Cloud security measures just aren’t keeping pace, and constant news of data breaches has caught people’s attention.
Andrew Kellett, lead analyst for Ovum, said that “Security, or lack thereof, is a significant issue. If there is one problem area inhibiting further adoption of cloud-based services, it is enterprise concerns about shortfalls in the protection regimes of many cloud service providers… There is both hope and fear when it comes to cloud and big data technologies. This fear can lead to slow implementation of these platforms, which stymies innovation and growth. But, there are steps enterprises can take and changes providers can make that will increase adoption. For example, more than half of global respondents would be more willing to use cloud services if the provider offers data encryption with key access control.”
Other findings in the Ovum report include:
- 80 percent of enterprises say that they’re using the cloud
- 60 percent of businesses and organizations say that they are storing sensitive data in the cloud
- 41 percent say that they’re worried that they’re storing sensitive data in the cloud
- 93 percent of organizations say that their spend on security will either remain constant or increase this year
