Cloud Computing: Few Organizations Remain on the Fence as Cloud Adoption Jumps
In 2013 RightScale developed a Cloud Maturity Model that identified four categories of organizations relative to their use of the cloud:
- Cloud Watchers – developing strategies, but have no deployed cloud applications
- Cloud Beginners – organizations creating prototype cloud projects
- Cloud Explorers – organizations with multiple applications deployed in the cloud
- Cloud Focused – organizations that are heavy users of the cloud
Just one year later, this scale for categorizing cloud maturity seems outdated. The bulk of organizations already fall somewhere in the categories between Cloud Beginners and Explorers. The 2014 RightScale survey found that already 94 percent of organizations have already deployed at least one application in the cloud, and 87 percent are using the public cloud for some of their work.
The report found that Cloud-Focused companies had overcome their worry about cloud security. Cloud security was cited as the largest concern by most organizations with limited cloud usage experience. Heavy cloud users, on the other hand, have met cloud security challenges head-on — only 13 percent of Cloud-Focused heavy-cloud-use businesses say that security is a concern to them. Once organizations have set up the infrastructure, processes and best practices for managing security in the cloud, their focus of attention often moves onto other application areas.
