Cloud Computing: Gartner Encourages CIOs to Look to the Future and Adopt the Cloud, but many CIOs Are Too Busy Fighting Existing Problems
Many CIOs are missing out on the benefits of cloud computing according to Gartner.
Dave Russell, vice president and analyst at Gartner said that “the survey results show that, for most CIOs, public cloud is an option for projects, but only a first consideration for a small minority. Leaders have been more protective of their existing infrastructure and, in many cases, have been the biggest obstacle to cloud-based solutions, often resorting to cloudwashing as an excuse to not seriously pursue a true cloud-based solution.” Cloudwashing refers to vendors that try to brand their products as associated with the cloud even if those products were not originally designed for the cloud.
Russell recommended that CIOs adopt a ‘cloud-first’ mentality when thinking about new projects and updates to existing ones. The Gartner survey found that 71 percent of CIOs thought that they should be doing more to emphasize the cloud and mobility to help future-proof their infrastructure, but many are concerned about the security and risks involved in moving to the cloud.
Many CIOs are just too busy to be able to make plans for the cloud. 84 percent of CIOs say that their focus is primarily on near term problems that they have with existing systems. Both tight budgets and the effort required to develop a plan that can move from today’s systems to tomorrow’s is slowing down any attempts by CIOs to re-engineer legacy solutions into cloud-based solutions.
In January, Piper Jaffray polled CIOs to get their take on cloud computing. Many CIOs in that survey also said that concerns about security still are keeping them away from implementing cloud projects. Among the cloud vendors that businesses are using, Amazon’s AWS still ranks number one, followed by Microsoft and then Rackspace.
