Cloud Computing: Lack of Oversight Cause Customers to Waste Billions on Unneeded Cloud Resources
The cloud is designed to make businesses more productive and more agile. The flip side to that though is that without adequate governance and oversight cloud costs can quickly go out of control.
Kim Weins, VP of Cloud Cost Strategy at RightScale, said that “teams now doing the provisioning often have little reason to ensure the efficient use of cloud resources. Prices for individual VMs or resources seem small, and it’s not until cloud use has grown and cloud spend becomes significant that they become aware of how waste adds up… Companies waste, on average, 35 percent of their cloud spend. This equates to $6.4 billion in annualized wasted cost for AWS alone. For the top three public cloud providers (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform), this represents annualized waste of $10 billion.”
Three ways that businesses can save on their cloud computing bills include:
- Using reserved instances whenever possible
- Identify and consolidate over-provisioned (idle) resources
- Use instances from lower-priced nearby regions
- Purge unneeded instances, snapshots and disks.
