Cloud Computing: Private Cloud is Just Another Name for On-Premise
Building a Private Cloud has been the objective of many mid to large companies that want the operational flexibility and quick scalability promised by public cloud vendors and that also want to be able to closely control their data to minimize security risks. But is a private cloud goal just a pipe dream?
Kurt Marko is an IT analyst, IT analyst, wrote that “I am skeptical of any claims about private cloud usage. The term conflates two very different environments under the term ‘cloud.’ Few organizations operate anything that remotely delivers the array of abstract services provided by an AWS or Azure. Nevertheless, it appears what little momentum the idea had is waning.”
A cloud computing survey by RightScale found that the use of a private cloud is now a top priority for only 8 percent of companies, a drop of 15 percentage points in two years.
Bernard Golden, vice president of strategy for ActiveState Software, wrote that “the core problem for the private cloud is that the providers are focused on delivering what solves their problem — pushing more hardware. This blinds them to the importance of top of stack services and causes them to spend endless energy on tweaking the infrastructure software to incorporate their latest switch. Or server. Or storage array… Five or ten years from now private cloud will seem like a mirage that once fooled the industry into believing water lay just up ahead.”
