Cloud Computing: Trends in 2022

By Dick Weisinger

The last two decades have seen stunning growth in the Internet. How can we expect the cloud to evolve going forward?

Gartner highlights four major cloud trends to look for in the near future:

Cloud Ubiquity – This trend seems to already be realized. Backups and data continuity are easier. Cost-wise, the cloud has provides Capex to Opex financial savings. Reduced IT staff requirements. The cloud provides the ability to grow and shrink usage on demand. In studies, cloud security trumps on-premise security. Many reasons make the cloud seem like a ‘no-brainer’.

Regional cloud ecosystems – Increasingly regulatory and industry compliance mandate that cloud providers silo data and applications to restrict them to specific geographies.

Sustainability – Again, government regulation, and also public sentiment is pushing cloud vendors to address issues like carbon neutrality and sustainability.

Automated Programmable Infrastructure – Infrastructure is becoming increasingly software defined and programmable. Programmability coupled with technology like AI and ML will eliminate many of the current tasks manually done by operations support today.

Henrique Cecci, research director at Gartner, said that “the economic, organizational and societal impact of the pandemic will continue to serve as a catalyst for digital innovation and adoption of cloud services. This is especially true for use cases such as collaboration, remote work and new digital services to support a hybrid workforce.”
