Cloud Computing: Use of the Cloud and Mobile Improves Disaster Preparedness

By Dick Weisinger

Benefits liike greater flexibility and cost savings are often attributed to new technologies like virtualization, the cloud and mobile.  But there may be another hidden benefit for using these technologies.  That’s better preparedness for disasters.  A recent study by Symantec finds that there is a strong correlation between disaster preparedness and the use of technologies like the cloud, virtualization and mobile.

Symantec found that among SMBs:

  • 34 percent selected virtualization partly because of better disaster preparedness
  • 37 percent selected to use private clouds partly because of better disaster preparedness
  • 36 percent selected to use mobile partly because of better disaster preparedness
The Symantec report found more than a third of SMBs are adopters of newer technologies like cloud computing, mobile and virtualization.
  • 43 percent are using a private cloud
  • 40 percent are using the public cloud
  • 35 percent are using mobile technologies
  • 34 percent are using virtualization
