Cloud Computing: Worries Persist about Operational Failure and Hidden Costs
Cloud computing offers numerous advantages over on-premise alternatives, such as reduction of IT resources, lower start-up costs, easier scalability, and flexible provisioning. But while a recent whitepaper by Research In Action found that 81 percent of businesses are already or will soon be using cloud infrastructure or services, there are still some lingering worries about adverse affects that use of cloud technology could bring. The report identifies hidden costs and penalties that can come along with cloud technology.
The report found that 79 percent of businesses are worried about hidden costs and problems that could come along with adoption of cloud technologies. These businesses worry about:
- Performance issues can lead to bad end-user experience, reduced customer loyalty, and could adversely affect brand perception
- Availability and performance issues can lead to loss of revenue
- Cloud-based applications may be more difficult to troubleshoot
- Cloud-based applications may require more time and effort to manage the vendors and service level agreements (SLAs)
Bernd Greifeneder, CTO of Compuware’s APM business unit, said that “with cloud adoption topping the list of priorities for CIOs, companies are clearly seeing a benefit to the agility, flexibility and time-to-value that cloud services can deliver. But CIOs are right to carefully consider the impact cloud and third-party services can have on end-user experience. The dynamic and remote characteristics of cloud-based applications require a new, smart and automatic approach for deep, proactive monitoring that not only identifies end-user experience problems but also provides deep diagnostics for problem resolution.”
