Cloud Security: Businesses Vulnerable from Lax Cloud Security

By Dick Weisinger

Cloud computing security has improved dramatically over recent years and rivals security that is available on-premise.  The problem with cloud security isn’t so much a short-coming in the technology as it is a problem of simply not applying the best technologies, policies and procedures to ensure that sensitive data is protected in the cloud.  Very often “out-of-the-box” public cloud software apps and infrastructure don’t come with the high security controls turned on by default.

The combination of “Shadow IT” and rapid adoption of public cloud software is becoming a serious problem for many companies.  “Shadow IT” is the practice of employees installing and using non-IT-sanctioned software or public cloud software. The report found that 36 percent of companies have already migrated all of their IT and data processing to the cloud and estimate that will increase to 45 percent in the next two years.  But 54 percent of companies aren’t proactive in managing security and data privacy within cloud environments.  The most common types of data being stored in the cloud include  survey, customer information, emails, consumer data, employee records and payment information.

Jason Hart, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Gemalto, said that “it’s quite obvious security measures are not keeping pace because the cloud challenges traditional approaches of protecting data when it was just stored on the network. It is an issue that can only be solve…”
