Cloud Storage: Benefits of Better Provisioning and Better Data Protection
Two of the biggest advantages of Cloud Storage are better provisioning and data protection. Those are the results from a recent survey from cloud computing company Twin Strata.
The Twin Strata report said that “While more than a third of respondents also indicated value in areas such as off-site data protection for disaster recovery, easier access to backup/archive and ease of budgeting, it’s clear that storage provisioning is a driving factor for the growth in cloud storage. In fact, nearly 57 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement, ‘It seems like we are always running out of storage.'”
51 percent of respondents said that the greatest value of cloud computing to them were the ability to scale their storage space upwards to match the growth patterns of their data volumes.
Of those companies surveyed, 73 percent had already begun using some type of cloud computing, and more than a quarter of those companies have been using the cloud for more than three years. The report also found that users of cloud storage had more confidence in their ability to recover data in the event of a disaster, with 72 percent saying that they could recover all their data within 24 hours, compared to 62 percent of those not using the cloud for storage. 12 percent of non-cloud storage users said that after a disaster, data recovery could take upwards of one week.
The greatest percentage of companies adopting the cloud were concentrated among smaller companies with 250-5000 employees, perhaps because the investment in existing infrastructure in smaller companies is likely to be more limited, compared to mid-size and large companies.
