Cognitive Computing: Big Investment in Computers That Can Think
Cognitive computing was identified by IDC as one of six “innovative accelerators”. Spending on cognitive systems is expected to reach $31.3 billion in 2019 and is growing at a rate of 55 percent.
Cognitive computing attempts to simulate human thought with computing. Cognitive computing systems are self-learning and make use of capabilities like data mining, pattern recognition and natural language processing.
Paul Brody, technology sector strategy leader at Ernst and Young, said that “the growing complexity of computing and information—and the need for more intelligent automation—is leading to the next wave of transformation, including cognitive systems.”
Vasant Honavar, professor at Pennsylvania State University, said that “my sense is that there are parts of the scientific community that are crying out for help. Cognitive tools are intended to work with human scientists, amplifying and augmenting their intellect, as part of collaborative human-machine systems. It is clear that we need such tools to realize the full potential of advances in measurement (and hence big data), data processing and simulation (HPC) to advance science.”
David Schubmehl, research director at IDC, said that “unstructured and semi-structured data is fueling a renaissance in the handling and analysis of information, resulting in a new generation of tools and capabilities that promise to offer intelligent assistance, advice, and recommendations to consumers and knowledge workers around the world.”
