Composable Enterprises: A Flexible Framework for Adapting to a Changing World
A composable enterprise is “an organization that delivers business outcomes and rapidly adapts to business change. Think of it as building blocks made from applications to be assembled and rearranged as needed,” as defined by Gartner.
Composable Enterprise design involves the packaging and compartmentalizing of a monolithic organization into its core workflows and procedures. Modularity is enabled by using APIs and microservices that can build the individual component pieces of the overall tech-stack framework.
Composability brings the advantages of agility and flexibility. Unlike businesses organized around monolithic applications, like legacy ERP systems, composability makes it easier to drill down and focus on change related to specific processes without impacting other components in the framework.
Gartner said that “monolithic application experiences no longer meet the requirements, expectations or preferences of innovative business users and their customers, now that they demand continuous business agility.”
Rich Waldron, CEO of tray.io, wrote in a piece for Forbes Innovation that “the composable enterprise enables organizations to fully capitalize on the effectiveness of SaaS apps and tools while maximizing their value, by assembling the critical components into fully scoped and customized business processes. With the additional flexibility comes the ability to adapt to changing market conditions faster, along with the ability to respond to customers faster to grow retention.”
