Computing: Alternative Computations Scale the Limits of Moore’s Law
Because advances in conventional semiconductors are coming up against the limits of Moore’s Law, researchers are looking for other options for improving computing performance. Quantum Computing is one path being investigated.
Another novel hardware approach is called the Ising Machine, named after physician Ernst Ising. The concept is based on the properties of magnetic spin. While not general-purpose, Ising machines are able to solve some very difficult “NP-hard” problems that are unsolvable using standard computers. The types of problems that can be solved are “combinatorial optimizations”.
New studies suggest that variations of the Ising machine work especially well for handling problems in machine learning and optimization science.
Tatsuhiko Shirai, assistant professor at Waseda University, said that an Ising machine can “solve new complex optimization problems and help tackle climate change-related issues such as increased energy demand, food shortage, and the realization of sustainable development goals (SDGs). For example, to optimize shipping and delivery planning problems in industries to increase their efficiency while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.”
