Container Technology: Rapid Adoption Expected Over Next Year
First came a wave of virtualization technology. Now we have containers. While not direct competitors, the two technologies have overlap. The difference between the two is primarily a matter of scope. The scope of containers is restricted to a single application while the scope of virtualization is an encapsulation of an entire operating system and all the applications in it.
A recent survey from ClusterHQ/DevOps.com tried to assess to what extent organizations are using containers. Hype around containers has certainly piqued interest in the technology. As many as 94 percent of organizations are investigating or using containers. 38 percent say that they have moved forward with the technology and deployed it on their production sites. That’s expected to increase to 69 percent over the next 12 months. Among the container technologies being investigated and used, 92 percent say they are looking at Docker.
Barriers that are still holding people back from using container technology include:
- Security (61 percent)
- Data Management (53 percent)
- Networking Issues (51 percent)
- Lack of the right skillset (48 percent)
