Content Management: CEVAs – Content Enabled Vertical Applications
In an attempt to describe information-heavy applications that focus on a specific area or industry, Gartner coined the term CEVA (Content enabled vertical application) a few years back. CEVAs are are a new generation of content applications that are now possible because applications are now readily able to build on a solid foundation of mature ECM technologies. At Formtek we’ve long referred to content application verticals as BAs — Business Applications.
CEVAs typically target a specific industry and are a result of highly customized ECM technology. ECM customizations done to support CEVAs include changing terminology to reflect jargon of the target industry, choosing appropriate document types, and modeling security and business processes for the target industry.
Over the last few months, the use of the term CEVA is popping up a lot. Part of the interest in CEVAs is that people are viewing content and data managment technologies as infrastructure tools, much like the database, that can be used to create business solutions. Increased interest in CEVAs is also being driven by the popularity of CMIS and the promise of creating information-rich applications capable of aggregating data from multiple repository data sources.
