Data Management: Applying the Lessons of Cloud Operations to On-Premise

By Dick Weisinger

There are a lot of benefits to effectively using data. “Getting data right” means that your business is healthy and is able to move forward with new initiatives easily. It means that company leaders are more easily able to inspire innovation, exceed business goals, and avoid unnecessary risks. And, it means that stakeholders are happier, and consumers are better served and more satisifed. This, according to a report by Hewlett Package Enterprise (HPE).

The HPE report finds that data complexity is the biggest barrier to effectively using data in IT environments. Its survey found that 74 percent of businesses aren’t able to keep pace with business requirements.

The solution suggested in the HPE report is to use “On-premise Cloud Operations”. This doesn’t mean migrating operations to the cloud. Rather it means applying the benefits of cloud operations to on-premise systems.

The elements of “On-premise Cloud” include:

  • As-a-Service capabilities, especially data infrastructure
  • Operations/Workloads integrated with data-driven AI and Machine Learning
  • Automation with “comprehensive visibility”

“By simplifying data management with a cloud operational experience, data-first leaders were nearly twice as likely as nascent organizations to report advancements in their data management environment.”
