Data Overflow: One Million English Words and Phrases

By Dick Weisinger

IDC says that the size of the digital universe is doubling every eighteen months.  Parallel to that explosion of data is the expansion of terminology in the English language.

According to Global Language Monitor, a new English word or phrase is being created every 98 minutes, or not quite 15 new words every day.  They have created an algorithm called the Predictive Quantities Indicator that is scanning electronic media, social sites, and databases, inspecting language that is being used.   English now consists of more than one million words and phrases.
It’s interesting to note that ‘Web 2.0’ has taken the distinction of English phrase one million.  Phrase 1,000,001 is “Financial Tsunami”.
