Data Virtualization: Building a Single Common Interface to Business Data Sources

By Dick Weisinger

Data virtualization provides a real-time “virtual” interface to data that originates from multiple data sources.  Data virtualization is useful for applications like Business Intelligence (BI), Big Data, and in organizations with federated repositories.  Data virtualization typically allows read/write access with the data source, access to metadata, and full compliance with security.

Some of the benefits of data virtualization include:

  • Exposes all data and makes it accessible via a single common interface
  • Enables data from all business services to be accessible
  • Exposes legacy data as a service
  • Provides a standard method for accessing metadata across systems
  • Provides a standard security model for accessing data

Gartner places Data Virtualization in the data integration tool market.  The global size of that market reached $2.7 billion in 2016 and is expected to grow to $4 billion by 2021.
