Disruption: Technology’s Bumps in the Road Ahead

By Dick Weisinger

Keep your eyes peeled‘, is effectively the advice Gartner offers to businesses. Disruptions to your business can lurk around the next corner and bite if you’re unprepared.

These are some of the potential disruptions that Gartner says that technology executives should consider:

  • Metaverse Workplace – workplaces of the future could transition to be held within virtual worlds located in the metaverse.
  • Flying Cars – Unmanned vehicles that can carry passengers short distances. Gartner expects flying taxis to be available in 2024.
  • Digital Humans – AI will bring virtual avatars, customer service reps, entertainers, and other virtual humans to life. The digital human economy will be large – Gartner estimates it will be $125 billion by 2035.
  • Decentralized Autonomous Organizations – Digital entities that use the blockchain to conduct business with other digital entities or businesses without human management. Gartner sees DAOs emerging within the IT services industry.
  • Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging – Dynamic EV charging will extend the range of vehicles and reduce costs.
  • Graphene Replaces Silicon – Graphene could replace silicon devices, especially for wireless communications.
  • Disposable Technology – Low Code/No Code and AI-assisted coding could make applications easier and faster to build. In the future applications might be quickly created, used, and discarded for a new and different application iteration.

David Yockelson, VP analyst at Gartner, said that “disruptions are fundamental shifts that create lasting change, and successful organizations will be those that are prepared to address them. We need to keep asking ‘what if’ to remain open to opportunities presented by disruptions.”

The pace of technology change may mean that disruption becomes a standard and frequent aspect of operating any kind of business.
