Technology: Top Trends for 2023

By Dick Weisinger

Technology advances are shaping everything in the world around us. Every year Gartner identifies technology trends that they expect to have an outsized impact on businesses over the next three to five years. For 2023, Gartner identified ten trends that will change businesses and enable improved growth and greater efficiency.

The top 10 technology trends for 2023 are as follows:

Vertical-market Clouds – cloud platforms that offer service portfolios tailored to meet the needs of a specific vertical industry. Cloud managers will advise and assist in the creation of cloud solutions for that industry and propose IT applications that meet their customer requirements. Sectors where vertical-market clouds might make sense include healthcare, manufacturing, supply-chain, agriculture and finance.

Reduce Infrastructure Barriers to Developers – Developers often lack the skills to build scalable cloud applications that use complex architecture or that span cloud and on-premise hybrid systems. Tools that help developers more seamlessly use and deploy across the infrastructure are needed.

Accelerate use of Wireless and Wi-Fi – enterprises will speed their adoption of wireless, wi-fi, and 5G network technologies. By 2025, 60 percent of enterprises will rely on five or more wireless technologies.

Build more Resilient Applications – Adopt modern application development practices (like observability, site reliability engineering, and chaos engineering) to make software that is more scalable, secure, and stable. Analytics and AI can be used to improve quality assurance. Tools for ensuring end-to-end security are key to helping applications be resilient.

Use Observability – Collecting data and using it to make decisions from the results of analytics should be just the first step. It’s also important to capture the context of the data used and how and what decisions were made to create a feedback loop to make better decisions in the future.

Trustworthy AI – Gartner found that AI is often not deployed because of a lack of trust in how AI handles data, security, and privacy issues. It is important to verify, validate, and ensure that ethical rules and strong data protection are used.

Create Superapps – Superapps are full-featured applications that include access to an ecosystem and attract both users and third-party app developers. The superapp is architected with differentiated features, a document data structure, and a published API. Opportunities are available in finance, health, and other verticals.

Accept the Metaverse – many are skeptical of the concept of the metaverse, but even if the future doesn’t end up on the path painted by current metaverse evangelists, the technologies underlying the current metaverse concept will continue to advance and be incorporated into products and services. Technologies like avatars, chatbots, augmented reality, and gamification will continue to evolve.

Technology will promote Sustainability – technology will have a role in improving our world. It can help with improving work culture, diversity, equity, training, the environment and climate change. Technology will continue to improve to become more sustainable, reduce energy consumption, and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
