ECM: Catch the Wave

By Dick Weisinger

Hot on the heels of Gartner’s 2007 ECM industry report is the “Forrester Wave for ECM Suites in 2007”. Forrester looked at only 11 ECM vendors and broke down their evaluation into three categories: Current Offering, Strategy/Roadmap, and Market Presence. Across all the categories they rated the vendors on 60 individual features.

The Forrester evaluation gave IBM the top spot, although Oracle, EMC and Open Text high marks. The nod to IBM and their FileNet product was based on their richness of their features in areas like imaging, document management, content archiving, records management, and content integration, although FileNet showed poorly in the area of Web Content Management.

Microsoft’s Sharepoint product was noted as a low-end long-term game-changer product and has collaboration features that are attractive. Vignette, Interwoven, SAP, Xerox and Highland’s OnBase were included in the report too.

Unlike the Gartner ECM report that ignored Open Source, Alfresco made the cut on Forrester’s. Forrester points out that Alfresco’s feature set for BPM, enterprise search and collaboration still need work, but the quality and feature set of Alfresco clearly rival traditional closed-source rivals.

Formtek is an Alfresco Gold partner and obviously very excited in the direction that the Alfresco platform is moving. Contact us to find out more about the flexibility of the Alfresco platform.
