ECM: Data Management for the Next Decade
Data management by businesses today is too technology focused and needs to become more focused on information. That’s the conclusion of a report by the Burton Group on Data Management Trends for 2010 and beyond.
The report identifies a number of trends in Data Management.
Databases — Relational databases are running into a wall because businesses need to manage more unstructured data and the associated metadata, something that databases weren’t designed to do well.
Business Intelligence — BI is increasingly important for businesses to compete well, but Burton suggests that to do BI well requires quality data and skilled BI analysts much more than specialized BI analytic tools.
Data Governance — Burton defines data governance as the submitting of data to regulators that is accurate, timely, reliable, secure and appropriate. Compliance and regulation requirements are becoming more stringent and businesses need to have a data governance strategy in place.
Metrics — Businesses need to establish quality metrics for evaluating IT department effectiveness. Burton suggests that businesses have been historically bad at establishing IT metrics, but does not really offer possible metrics to consider.
Burton has created a project methodology called the Methodology for Overcoming Data Silos (MODS) that provides project guidelines for structuring the use of data modeling, metadata management and data integration.
