ECM: The Word is Out. Now What?
AIIM released at their annual tradeshow AIIM Boston this week the results of their “state of the ECM industry” survey.
They’ve found that the gap is shrinking between small and large organizations in understanding of what ECM is and why it is important.
ECM is on people’s radars, but showing them what they need to do to implement it is the next hurdle.
John Mancini, president of AIIM, called this great news for the industry — people are aware of the benefits of ECM and are looking for guidance in how to proceed.
The AIIM survey found that compliance and business continuity has emerged as the number one reason companies are investing in ECM systems.
43 percent of those surveyed said that this was their most important driver to their interest in ECM, an increase of over 16 percent from 2006.
Some of the other results of the AIIM report include:
- Many organizations are not ready for the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure adopted in December 2006. 32% think that it would take at least one month to find all of the relevant information regarding a customer.
- Many organizations don’t trust the integrity of their electronic information. 52% of users surveyed have no more that ‘slight’ confidence in their information.
- Microsoft SharePoint is quietly invading organizations. Already 33% of organizations are using Microsoft Sharepoint in some way.
- The problem is that ECM usage, even that of Sharepoint, remains ad hoc with no clear strategy. Only 15% of users have created a “formal plan or strategy in place describing where they will utilize the SharePoint investments and where they will utilize other ECM investments.”
