ECM: Trends in 2008

By Dick Weisinger

AIIM has announced their list of top ten ECM trends for 2008. AIIM is the professional organization that sponsors vendor activities around ECM, a term that was coined by AIIM in 2000. Their list seems to be ‘right-on’:

  1. Microsoft SharePoint gains popularity as an ECM infrastructure tool
  2. SaaS and Open Source alternatives like Alfresco gain credibility and popularity
  3. Consolidation of vendor offerings around low-cost ECM infrastructure
  4. Dramatic price drop, triggering sales to SMBs and across all enterprise units
  5. Boom in Capture. SMBs will drive the digitization of paper processes
  6. Channel and Solution Providers increase in number and gain importance
  7. Quantifiable Best Practices in ECM systems
  8. Blurring of IT and Business especially as related to Records Management
  9. Tension between ‘Access’ and ‘Control’ — applying controls to enterprise search
  10. Social Computing
