ECM: What can an ECM System do For Me?

By Dick Weisinger

ECM brings clear benefits around cost reductions and improved worker efficiency and productivity.  AIIM recently had a great article around creating a business case for ECM which highlighted and described some of the benefits that can be
realized with ECM.  ECM benefits include.

  • Improved exchange of information and company-wide communication.  With the improved availability of information companies are seeing unexpected benefits such as different lines of businesses sharing data to help them cross-sell and upsell to existing customers.
  • Improved Risk Mitigation and Compliance.  ECM component technologies like Records Management make it easier for an organization to reduce corporate risk and better comply with regulations.  Documents can be readily searched and made available in the event of an e-Discovery investigation.
  • Improved Productivity and Reduced Costs.  Imaging and forms technology help automate and speed up business processes and often can reduce the amounts of paper used.
  • Business Continuity.  The ECM central repository or ‘vault’ can secure business-critical documents in the event of a disasters.  Mirror copies of the electronic data stored in geographically dispersed locations can be used to restore information that may have been destroyed or corrupted during a disaster.
