Edge Computing and IoT: IoT Vendors (Sometimes) Unite to Define Standard Operating
In April, the Linux Foundation launched the EdgeX Foundry, a vendor-neutral open-source project aimed at building interoperable devices that can work within an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.
The EdgeX Foundry defines Edge Computing as an IoT architecture that defines plug and play microservices that run on devices located at the edge.
DesAutels said that the goal of the EdgeX Foundry is to “reduce the anxiety organizations face when deciding what type of IoT solutions to implement, as many organizations are currently not deploying anything because they are afraid of making the wrong choice.”
Philip DesAutels, Senior Director of IoT for The Linux Foundation, said that “we don’t do standards. We do open-source software that defines effectively a de facto standard.”
DesAutels said that “the consumer side has been riddled with vendors trying to offer end-to-end solutions Vendors release their own frameworks and then muscle everyone else to join in. That’s why Google released Works with Nest and why Apple has HomeKit.”
