Enterprise Content Management: A Drop-In Alfresco ECM Appliance
Ingress has teamed up with Alfresco to offer a quick-start approach to getting an ECM system up and running: a “software appliance”. Based on the rPath “just enough operating system” (JeOS) version of Linux, Ingress has created the Ingres Icebreaker Enterprise Content Management software appliance. It is a totally preconfigured software image of an ECM system that includes Operating System and application. Users can just deploy the “software appliance” as a virtual server and be up and running immediately.
Ingress also will offer consolidated support for the appliance which includes support for the OS, the Ingres database, and Alfresco. Offering a single point of contact for the solution considerably simplifies the use of open source software. The cost of the appliance is $32,000 per CPU and offers an easy-to-setup alternative to Microsoft SharePoint.
It’s an interesting approach for getting up and running with Open Source software very quickly. But it’s not clear how much additional assistance Ingres will provide towards making the ECM installation a success. Without doing any up-front analysis, important configuration parameters can’t be captured, like data to define the content model, the users who will access the system, the necessary levels of access premissions, and any other usage requirements or expectations.
