Enterprise IT: Many Executives Want to Tear it Down and Start Over
In just four years time the role of Enterprise IT and CIOs is expected to change dramatically. Researchers Jeanne G. Harris and Allan E. Alter at Accenture’s Institute for High Performance have conducted and published the results of a survey that finds that many organizations are rethinking their IT operations. Mike Vizard of ITBusinessEdge provides a summary of those findings.
- 50 percent of executives say that their companies plan to transform their Enterprise IT over the next 12 months
- 68 percent of executives think that things are changing so quickly that they don’t have a clear vision for what their IT group will look like by 2016
- 72 percent of executives similarly say that they don’t have a clear vision for what the role of the CIO within their business will look like by 2016
Despite the uncertainty about what IT will look like in four years time, many executives see Enterprise IT as becoming more flexible, more cost-efficient, and requiring fewer resources to manage.
- 42 percent of IT executives think that global multinationals will significantly be able to lower their IT spending by 2016
- 36 percent of IT executives think that it will be possible to reinvent IT infrastructure in 30 days by 2016
- 35 percent of IT executives expect the number of resources needed to man the IT group to decline by at least half by 2016
- 43 percent of employees say that they feel comfortable enough to be able to make their own IT decisions without consulting with a central IT group
The Accenture report describes at least five areas where Enterprise IT is likely to remain active. These include:
- Setting policies on cloud computing adoption (46 percent of executives expect this)
- Setting security policies (45 percent)
- Leading projects to migrate IT to cloud computing equivalents (40 percent)
- Deciding which consumer IT to use (39 percent)
- Design of overall technology and data architecture (38 percent)
