The most popular and comprehensive Open Source ECM platform
Enterprise Search: Do You Need It?
Times are tough and companies are cutting back on expenditures. Gartner suggests that one place that companies might look to save some dollars is on their Enterprise Search solution. Enterprise Search can be costly — $500K installations are not uncommon. Gartner suggests considering lower cost search alternatives.
Part of the reason to consider alternatives is that enterprise search alone does not create a comprehensive solution to managing information. Without a firm plan in place for how to manage information, with a strategy that addresses both information categorization and metadata tagging, the benefits from a search-only solution will be sub-optimal.
For customers that are relying only on enterprise search for their information management, Gartner suggests considering search appliances, hosted search solutions, or conventional off-the-shelf inexpensive search solutions as alternatives to Enterprise Search. These are often more cost effective and, depending on the needs of an organization, often provide similar results.
Another option to consider is adopting an ECM solution rather than Enterprise Search — open source solutions like Alfresco are Enterprise-ready and can provide a more comprehensive approach to data and information management. While an ECM solution requires more discipline to maintain than a plug-and-play Enterprise Search application, the accuracy of search can be significantly higher with the additional benefit of providing features that can improve the efficiency of business processes.
