Enterprise Search: Organizations Wary of Security Flaws in Search Technology

By Dick Weisinger

Enterprise Search is a $1.9 billion industry in 2013 according to Gartner.  But while the space is growing, and despite the productivity benefits that Enterprise Search technology provides, only 38 percent of organizations say that they plan to invest in the technology.  Those are the results of a survey of 300 security professionals by Varonis.  The chief reason why organizations are reluctant to invest is security.  68 percent of organizations worry that employees will be able to get access to files and information which they shouldn’t see.

Other concerns that hold back organizations from adopting Enterprise Search include:

  • Accuracy of results (36 percent)
  • Expect resistance from end users (29 percent)
  • Can’t scale a system to be able to index all company data (24 percent)

David Gibson, VP of Marketing at Varonis, said that “given the reliance consumers have on web search and the value we all derive from it, one might think that the power to easily find business documents would be equally compelling for enterprises. But there are clearly obstacles that past approaches have failed to overcome.”
