Enterprise Search: Top Vendors

By Dick Weisinger

Forrester Research has identified and ranked the top Enterprise Search vendors for 2008 Q2. Vendors need to have at least 75 enterprise search customers across multiple vertical markets. The vendors need to be growing. The customer base of the vendor needs to have grown by at least 30 percent over the last year. And the revenues need to exceed $10 million and be growing at least 25 percent annually.

Their conclusion? Autonomy, Endeca, FAST/Microsoft, and Vivisimo are the market leaders of enterprise search, and among these, Autonomy edges out the others. Software giants IBM and Oracle don’t focus directly on enterprise search although both ofer broader enterprise software
that include a component of search.

When plotted on the Forrester wave chart, it’s clear that search is a competitive space. All eleven of the companies rank cluster in the upper right corner and are categorized as ‘leaders’. Only Microsoft’s Enterprise Search and Coveo Soltuions products are rated as “Strong Performers”.

Forrester emphasized that the approaches to search vary widely among the vendors. No one approach fits all enterprises, so potential buyers should shop around and compare. On the lower end, search prices are dropping and many free options are available that may be sufficient for small groups or departmental solutions.
