Enterprise Security: Cloud and Outsourced IT Operations Bring Risks

By Dick Weisinger

Cloud software is increasingly attracting businesses to move more of the infrastructure and services outside of their IT oversight.  That decision can bring efficiencies, associated cost savings, and often better quality.  But Gartner says that the tradeoff for moving IT operations outside of the business can be greater cybersecurity risks.  In fact, Gartner predicts that lowered oversight that often occurs when IT operations are outsourced will result in 60 percent of digital businesses experiencing a major service failure by 2020.

Paul Proctor, analyst at Gartner, said that “cyber-security is a critical part of digital business with its broader external ecosystem and new challenges in an open digital world.  Organisations will learn to live with acceptable levels of digital risk as business units innovate to discover what security they need and what they can afford. Digital ethics, analytics and a people-centric focus will be as important as technical controls.”

What are the ways that businesses can protect themselves in the digital world?  Gartner lists the following as key areas to consider:

  • Improved leadership and governance
  • Better decision making and prioritisation
  • Budget allocation
  • Improved measurement and reporting
  • Transparency and accountability
