Enterprise Software: In the Future, Every Company Will Be a Cloud Company

By Dick Weisinger

Cloud Computing has continued throughout 2022 with unstoppable momentum. Covid was the impetus that forced the entire business world to speed their transformation towards digital. The last two years in particular have seen enormous growth in the areas of collaboration, connectivity, and communication tools. Expect businesses to increase their investments in cloud infrastructure, customer relationship, finance, and e-commerce software and services.

A survey of US businesses found that more than half of them expect to have have fully moved their IT infrastructure to the cloud within the next five years and 93 percent of them said that they will be using the cloud in some way. Most of those that haven’t fully committed to the cloud are being held back by compliance and regulations like GDPR, HIPAA, and CMMC.

The cloud is providing a foundation for business competitive advantage.

Allison Perkel, vice president of engineering for Capital One, told TechCrunch about the cloud: “it’s not just an engineering decision, not just a product decision, not a product and engineering decision. It’s a company decision. Your sales teams, your marketing teams, your CEO, your CFO, you have to have alignment that, yes, this is the right thing to do. That can be a little bit slow, but once we have that consensus, it’s like a lightning bolt. It’s a profound, transformative, amazing environment to be a part of. One of the great things about being all-in on cloud-based culture is that, when things that you don’t expect, like a global pandemic, hit, you can keep operational. You can keep giving the customers that type of near real-time experience that they crave in today’s modern world.

Richard Waters, US West-coast editor at the Financial Times, wrote that “when software changed the way businesses operated, it became fashionable to say that every company was now a tech company. In the future, that could be replaced by a new refrain: every company is a cloud company.”
