Gartner on ECM: Magic Quadrant Rankings for 2013
The 2013 Gartner Magic Quadrant report for ECM is now available. A complementary view of the report results is available from Alfresco. A total of 23 companies are included and ranked in the report. The current annual value of the ECM market is $4.7 billion. The 2013 ECM market grew 7.2 percent over the previous year.
Vendors in the leaders quadrant include IBM, Microsoft, EMC, Hyland Software, OpenText and Perceptive.
Niche vendors include: Ever Team, Fabasoft, HP, Laserfiche, M-Files, Newgen, Objective, Siav, Saperion, Software Innovation, SpringCM, SunGard, Systemware, Unisys.
Alfresco shares the ‘visionary quadrant’ with Xerox, and Oracle slipped from the ‘leader quadrant’ to ‘challenger’.
The worry with ‘visionaries’ is their ability to execute. The worry with ‘challengers’ is their weakness of vision. ‘Niche’ players fall short on both the vision and ability to execute when compared to the leaders.
Rankings haven’t changed that much over the years. The slip by Oracle into the challenger quadrant is the most notable difference in this year’s rankings. In the 2012 rankings, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle clustered among the best of the leaders. The 2013 rankings show IBM as the principal leader followed by Microsoft.
Requirements in order to be included in the Gartner ECM Magic Quadrant report include:
- Must have at least $10 million annual revenues
- Must be actively marketing an ECM product with references
- Must be a vendor in at least two major regions
- Product must include functionality from at least four of the following ECM areas [Gartner also weights the importance of these features as shown in parentheses]:
- Document management (15%)
- Workflow/business process management (BPM) (22%)
- Imaging Processing Applications (18%)
- Records Management (13%)
- Web content management (WCM) (7%)
- Social content (15%)
- Extended Components (10%)
